In a historic achievement, Amazon MGM’s holiday action-comedy Red One, starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, has set the biggest opening record in the platform’s history. The movie garnered a massive 50 million viewers worldwide in its first four days of release, making it the most-watched film on Amazon.
Previously, the record was held by Red House, which took two weeks to reach the same 50 million viewer milestone. However, Amazon has not disclosed the specific method it uses to calculate these viewer statistics, unlike platforms such as Netflix and Disney+, which determine their stats based on the movie’s duration and total viewership.
Jennifer Salke, head of Amazon MGM Studios, expressed her excitement, stating, “Every movie has its own flavor, and Red One is something truly special. We are thrilled with its success and grateful to partner with the filmmakers.”
Released on November 16, Red One premiered in 3,000 theaters in North America and 3,300 internationally. The movie has grossed over $175 million globally at the box office. However, its online release has seen even greater viewer engagement.
In the movie, Johnson plays the role of a security chief from the North Pole on a mission to rescue a kidnapped Santa Claus. He teams up with a hacker to save Santa, and the film’s exciting action, Johnson’s stellar performance, and its Christmas-time release have all contributed to its massive success, according to industry analysts.
