Doctor Arrested from Operating Theater During Treatment of Critically Ill Pregnant Patient in Bangladesh

The Voice News :In a dramatic turn of events, the Detective Branch (DB) of police in Bangladesh entered the operating theater of a hospital in Demra, Dhaka, and arrested a doctor while he was administering anesthesia to a critically ill pregnant patient. The incident took place on the night of Sunday, May 26, 2025, at Sheba Hospital & Lab in the Hajinagar area. According to the Dhaka Metropolitan Detective Police, local residents attempted to prevent the arrest, leading to a scuffle. Bangladeshi news outlet Ajker Patrika reported the incident.

The arrested physician, Dr. Imran Hossain, is an anesthesia specialist employed at the Matuil Maternity Institute. He is reportedly implicated in multiple cases, including two murder charges related to an alleged uprising in July-August. Acting on a tip-off, a team from the DB’s Cyber Crime Unit, led by Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) Bakul Hossain, conducted the operation.

ADC Bakul stated, “Through technological surveillance, we confirmed that Dr. Imran, an accused in a murder case, was at Sheba Hospital in Demra. Based on precise intelligence, we conducted the raid and arrested him. Although there was some resistance during the operation, he was taken into custody with assistance from local residents and later handed over to the police station.”

Demra Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Mahmudur Rahman confirmed to Ajker Patrika that Dr. Imran is currently in the custody of the Metropolitan Cyber Crime Unit. “We supported the DB police after being informed and assisted in executing the arrest,” he said.

Hospital officials stated that Dr. Imran was on-call to administer anesthesia for a patient undergoing surgery for a rare and life-threatening condition known as Cesarean Scar Ectopic Pregnancy (CSEP). After he had administered the anesthesia, and while the patient remained unconscious for over an hour and a half, DB officers entered the operating room and detained him. Hospital staff raised an alarm, drawing local residents to the scene, which escalated into a brief confrontation. The situation was eventually brought under control with the help of Demra police.

Dr. Md. Anisur Rahman, Managing Director of Sheba Hospital, told Ajker Patrika, “Dr. Imran is not a regular member of our staff. He provides anesthesia services on-call when needed. We were unaware of the murder allegations against him. The hospital bears no responsibility in this matter.”

Cesarean Scar Ectopic Pregnancy (CSEP) is a rare but serious obstetric complication where an embryo implants in the scar tissue of a previous cesarean section, typically in the lower part of the uterus. It is classified as a non-tubal ectopic pregnancy and poses significant life-threatening risks.

Police further stated that Dr. Imran is the prime accused in a murder case filed at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station during the anti-discrimination student movement. He also faces several other charges across various jurisdictions, including a mass murder case registered at Jatrabari Police Station on August 5. Dr. Imran previously served as the president of the Bangladesh Chhatra League unit at Faridpur Medical College and held the position of Health Affairs Advisor to the Awami League at the Matuil Maternity Institute.
