A group of radical Islamist youths has reportedly seized control of Tejgaon Police Station, located near the Prime Minister’s Office in Dhaka, Bangladesh. According to public perception, the police force present was unable to prevent their entry into the station premises, which is now blocked off.
The group entered the premises in an organized manner and obstructed the main entrance of the office building, sitting in front of the closed collapsible gate while chanting aggressive slogans.
Despite the severity of the situation, mainstream media has refrained from reporting such incidents, due to pressure. However, a video capturing the event has gone viral on social media.
In the video, the youths can be seen chanting slogans in support of August 5 power change. No police officers are visible in the footage. It is speculated that the on-duty officers were forced out, after which the group locked the collapsible gate and stationed themselves in front of it. One youth can be seen walking behind the locked doors.
Efforts to contact official government sources for comment have been unsuccessful.
The motive behind the incident is still unknown, as the group has not allowed any journalists to approach them without verifying their identity. They have reportedly shown hostility toward journalists they deem suspicious, even resorting to physical intimidation.
