Dhaka Cantonment Declared No-Assembly Zone Amid Security Concerns

The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) has imposed an indefinite ban on public gatherings, demonstrations, rallies, and marches in and around the Dhaka Cantonment area, effective from Sunday. This includes strategic points such as Kochukhet, Bijoy Sarani, Jahangir Gate, BAF Shaheen College, Mohakhali Flyover, ECB Chattar, and surrounding zones. The decision, ISPR states, aims to maintain public safety and prevent any untoward incidents.

The directive comes following the arrest of dismissed army personnel Naimul Islam and two of his associates. They were allegedly involved in plotting subversive activities near the cantonment and spreading inflammatory content on social media to provoke unrest among current and former military members. According to ISPR, Naimul had a record of disciplinary issues, abusive behavior toward his family, and attempts to mobilize other dismissed personnel for unlawful activities.

In a prior notice, ISPR urged all retired and dismissed military personnel to avoid any involvement in destabilizing actions, emphasizing that such behavior tarnishes the image of the armed forces. It was also revealed that 802 reinstatement applications from dismissed soldiers are currently under process through the proper legal framework.

In parallel, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has enforced similar restrictions in key areas of the capital, including the Supreme Court premises, the Chief Advisor’s official residence, and parts of the Secretariat, citing growing concerns over political volatility and increasing street protests. These measures reflect heightened government sensitivity to maintaining order amid a tense political climate and ongoing socio-political demonstrations.
