Washington, D.C. – April 22, 2025
Democratic Texas Representative Greg Casar, Chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, has joined other Democratic leaders in calling for the dismissal of Elon Musk from his role as a special government employee. The announcement was made during a Congressional hearing, where Casar criticized Musk’s tenure and alleged conflicts of interest.
Concerns Over Musk’s Role
Casar and his colleagues argue that Musk has used his position to enrich himself while implementing policies that have negatively impacted federal agencies and services. In a letter to the White House, the lawmakers accused Musk of causing harm to working Americans, citing issues such as challenges in accessing Social Security and disruptions in veterans’ healthcare services.
The letter also highlighted Musk’s involvement in securing federal contracts for his companies, including SpaceX, as a potential conflict of interest. Casar described Musk’s actions as reckless and called for immediate action to ensure compliance with federal ethics rules.
Demands for Accountability
The Democratic leaders have requested that the White House publicly commit to a May 30 deadline for Musk’s departure, in accordance with federal law limiting special government employees to 130 days in office. They emphasized the need for transparency and accountability in government appointments.
Musk’s Response
Musk has defended his role, stating that his work as a special government employee has focused on reducing the federal deficit and improving efficiency. He has expressed confidence that his initiatives will achieve significant savings by the end of May.
