Dave Bautista has officially ruled out returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) as his beloved character, Drax the Destroyer. The actor, who portrayed the fan-favorite intergalactic warrior in Guardians of the Galaxy and several other MCU films, confirmed that his time as Drax has come to an end.
In an interview with ComicBook.com, Bautista explained that he has no interest in reprising his role unless Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn personally called him to bring Drax back. However, with Gunn now heading the DC Universe, Bautista believes a return is highly unlikely, stating, “It obviously is not gonna happen.”
Bautista first portrayed Drax in Guardians of the Galaxy in 2014, and the character quickly became a fan-favorite. He later returned for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame, and Thor: Love and Thunder, before departing from the MCU in 2023 to pursue more dramatic roles.
Despite closing the door on Drax, Bautista expressed his openness to joining the MCU or DC Universe in a different role. “I do wanna be in that world, I’m a fan of that world, I’m a fan of comic books,” he said. Bautista revealed that he has spoken to James Gunn and the Russo brothers, telling them not to “count me out” for future roles.
While Drax’s journey in the MCU may have ended, Bautista’s potential future in superhero films remains wide open.
