Dalai Lama Predicts Reincarnation Outside China

For over a decade, political and diplomatic circles have speculated about the successor of the 15th Dalai Lama. China has closely monitored the issue and is expected to intervene in selecting the next Dalai Lama, potentially appointing a candidate aligned with its interests. However, the 14th Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso, has now put an end to these speculations by declaring that his reincarnation will take place outside China, in a “free world.” He made this prediction in his book Voice for the Voiceless.

This statement is expected to further intensify the long-standing dispute between China and the Dalai Lama. Over six decades ago, he fled Tibet and sought refuge in India to escape Chinese rule. Many Tibetans worldwide wish to preserve the Dalai Lama’s institution. However, in recent years, China has repeatedly asserted that it alone has the authority to select the next Dalai Lama. The current Dalai Lama has firmly stated that he will not recognize any successor chosen by Beijing.

China has labeled the Dalai Lama a “separatist” and accused him of using religion as a cover for anti-China activities. On Monday, a spokesperson for China’s foreign ministry reiterated that Tibet remains an integral part of China, and the Dalai Lama’s statements cannot change Tibet’s development and prosperity. Last month, Beijing stated that it hoped the Dalai Lama would “return to the right path” and left open the possibility of dialogue if he acknowledged Tibet as an inseparable part of China.

According to Tibetan Buddhist traditions, a high-ranking monk is believed to reincarnate in a new child after passing away. The current Dalai Lama was recognized for this role at the age of two. In his book, he emphasized that the struggle for Tibet’s freedom would continue even after his death.
