Cross-Border Tensions Escalate in Jammu’s Akhnoor Sector as Villagers Demand Action
Jammu, May 13 – Despite the recent ceasefire agreement, Pakistan continues to violate the terms, causing distress among residents in border villages near the Akhnoor sector in Jammu. The ongoing cross-border firing has forced villagers to flee their homes, seeking safety from the escalating violence.
Residents of Mahantpati, a village just 400 meters from the International Border (IB), have been repeatedly displaced due to the hostilities. Many villagers, frustrated by the repeated disruptions, are now demanding a decisive response from the Indian government.
“After the firing started from the Pakistani side, we were taken to a safe place. We returned after four days following the ceasefire announcement. But again, last night, the firing resumed. We had to stay the whole night in the bunker with our children,” said Bodhiray Sharma, a local resident.
The sentiment of frustration is echoed by many, including Shrishta Devi, who expressed anger over the situation. “We have to run from place to place with our children. Prime Minister Modi should teach Pakistan a harsh lesson this time,” she said, holding a mortar shell fragment fired from Pakistan two days ago.
The continuous firing has also impacted the youth, disrupting education and livelihoods. Sagar Kumar, a young resident, reported seeing around 50 drones in the area, further heightening concerns over security breaches.
The situation has drawn comparisons to the Kargil War, during which villagers were displaced for three years. Neelam Kumar, another resident, recalled the hardships faced during that time. “During the Kargil war, we couldn’t complete our education, and we’re still suffering from its consequences. If a war starts this time, it must be taken to its conclusion,” he stated.
With tensions rising, villagers are urging the government to take strong action to ensure their safety and prevent further disruptions to their lives.
