COVID-19 Cases in India Surge by 1200% in Just One Week

The Voice News: COVID-19 infections are once again rising sharply in India. According to the latest data, active COVID-19 cases in the country have increased by 1200% in just one week, reaching 3,395 cases as of May 31. On May 22, the number was only 257.

The Indian states most affected by the recent spike are Kerala, Maharashtra, and Delhi, according to a report published on June 1 by Indian media outlet NDTV.

The Indian Ministry of Health reports that 685 new infections were recorded in the last 24 hours alone. On May 26, active cases had risen to 1,010 and continued to surge through the end of the month.

According to official figures:

Kerala has reported 1,336 active cases, including 189 new infections.

Other states with significant numbers include:

Maharashtra: 467 cases

Delhi: 375

Gujarat: 265

Karnataka: 234

West Bengal: 205

Tamil Nadu: 185

Uttar Pradesh: 117

Smaller rises were reported in Rajasthan, Puducherry, Haryana, Andhra Pradesh, and Madhya Pradesh.

According to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), genome sequencing has detected Omicron sub-variants as the primary cause behind the new wave, especially in western and southern India. ICMR Director Dr. Rajeev Bahl stated that the infections began in the south and are now spreading to northern regions as well.

Dr. Bahl added that although the transmission rate has increased, the severity remains low, with most cases showing mild symptoms. He emphasized the need for vigilance and preparedness, even though there is currently no reason for panic.

As of now, 26 people have died from COVID-19 in India in 2025, with 4 deaths reported in the last 24 hours. The deceased were from Delhi, Kerala, Karnataka, and Uttar Pradesh. Most had pre-existing health conditions, including pneumonia and respiratory issues.

Health authorities are monitoring the situation through India’s Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP).
