Chris Evans Speaks Out on Being Retired as Captain America

Chris Evans has officially responded to recent rumors suggesting he would reprise his role as Steve Rogers/Captain America in Avengers: Doomsday. The reports, which emerged in December, claimed that Evans had signed on for Marvel’s next big team-up film, set to be released in 2026. However, in a recent interview with Esquire, Evans shut down the speculation, calling it “not true” and explaining that such rumors have been circulating ever since Avengers: Endgame.

“That’s not true, though,” Evans said. “This always happens. I mean, it happens every couple years. I’ve just stopped responding to it. Yeah, no—happily retired!”

Evans’ comments came after a report in Deadline claimed his return for Avengers: Doomsday, which would potentially feature him as Captain America or another character. Anthony Mackie, who now plays Captain America as Sam Wilson, also expressed surprise at the reports, revealing that he had spoken to Evans recently, and the actor had given no indication that a return was on the table. Mackie said Evans told him, “I’m happily retired,” when asked about it.

While Evans’ denial stands firm for now, some fans remain skeptical, as actors have previously denied MCU comebacks only to surprise audiences later.

In the same Esquire piece, Mackie, who is leading Captain America: Brave New World, discussed his own future in the franchise, noting he plans to stick around for at least a decade. However, he joked that he doesn’t want to be playing Captain America at 60, hinting at a possible long-term commitment to the role.

For now, Evans appears content in his retirement from the role that defined much of his career. Fans will have to wait and see if this truly marks the end of Steve Rogers’ journey in the MCU.
