Chris Evans Returning to Marvel for “Avengers: Doomsday”

Chris Evans, known for his roles in Deadpool and Wolverine, is returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) in Avengers: Doomsday. The movie will be directed by the Russo brothers, who worked with Evans on four films, and it will star Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom. The film will be released on May 1, 2026.

Evans is most famous for playing Steve Rogers/Captain America in the MCU, but he also played Johnny Storm/The Human Torch in Deadpool and Wolverine, reprising his role from the Fantastic Four films made by Fox in the 2000s.

It’s not clear which character Evans will play in Avengers: Doomsday—whether he will return as Captain America or as Johnny Storm. The movie will involve different timelines and universes, and many actors from previous Marvel films, including Fantastic Four, are expected to appear.

In Avengers: Endgame (2019), Evans’ character, Steve Rogers, retired after traveling back in time to live with Peggy Carter. He passed on the Captain America shield to Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie). Evans first appeared as Captain America in Captain America: The First Avenger (2011) and went on to star in several other Marvel films, including The Avengers (2012), Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014), Avengers: Infinity War (2018), and Endgame (2019). He also made brief appearances in Thor: The Dark World (2013) and Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017).

In a 2023 interview with GQ, Evans said he would be open to returning to the MCU if the story felt right. He added that he wouldn’t want to come back just for the money or if it didn’t live up to fans’ expectations.

Evans was first cast as Captain America in 2010 after turning down the role several times. He was chosen over actors like John Krasinski and Garrett Hedlund. On his final day of filming Endgame, Evans thanked fans and the cast, saying, “Playing this role over the last 8 years has been an honor.”
