Chinmoy Das’s Bail Suspended by Chamber Judge Court

The Chamber Judge Court has suspended the bail granted by the High Court to Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari, spokesperson of the Bangladesh United Sanatan Jagarana Jote, in a sedition case.

The order was issued on Wednesday evening (April 30) by Chamber Judge Justice Md. Rezaul Haque of the Appellate Division.

Earlier in the day, a High Court bench comprising Justice Md. Ataur Rahman and Justice Md. Ali granted bail to Chinmoy Krishna Das, a former ISKCON leader, in the same case. Later in the afternoon, the state filed an appeal in the Chamber Court seeking suspension of the bail order.

Advocate Apurba Kumar Bhattacharya appeared for Chinmoy Das, while Additional Attorney General Barrister Anik R Haque and Abdul Jabbar Bhuiyan represented the state.

On October 25 last year, a large rally of the Sanatan community was held in Chattogram. Following this, on October 31, a sedition case was filed against Chinmoy Das and 18 others, accusing them of dishonoring the national flag.

Later, on November 22, another major rally was organized under Chinmoy’s leadership in Rangpur. Subsequently, he was arrested in Dhaka on November 25 in connection with the sedition case. The next day, a bail plea was rejected by the Chattogram Metropolitan Magistrate Court, which sent him to jail.

On the day of his court appearance, clashes broke out between Chinmoy’s followers and law enforcement as well as lawyers in Chattogram. During the unrest, lawyer Saiful Islam Alif was stabbed to death outside the court premises. Chinmoy Das has remained in jail since then.

On January 2, 2025, the Chattogram Metropolitan Sessions Judge Court rejected his bail application, after which his legal team filed for bail with the High Court.
