Chinese President Xi Jinping to Visit Russia for Nazi Defeat Commemoration

Chinese President Xi Jinping is set to visit Russia on a four-day official trip starting May 7 to attend the 80th anniversary of Nazi Germany’s defeat in World War II. The event is widely recognized as Victory in Europe Day (V-E Day), according to British news agency Reuters.

In a statement posted on social media platform Telegram, the Kremlin announced that Xi will hold a private meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin to further strengthen the strategic partnership between the two nations. The two leaders are also expected to sign several agreements.

The discussions will cover overall bilateral relations, strategic cooperation, and key international and regional issues.

During World War II, the Soviet Union lost nearly 27 million lives. Ultimately, Soviet forces pushed Nazi troops back to Berlin, culminating in Hitler’s suicide and the raising of the Soviet flag over the Reichstag in 1945, marking Moscow’s victory.

Alongside the Chinese President, the presidents of Brazil and Serbia, as well as the Prime Minister of Slovakia, may also attend the commemorative events in Moscow.

In light of the May 9 celebrations, President Putin has proposed a three-day ceasefire with Ukraine. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky responded by saying he would consider the offer only if it involved at least a 30-day ceasefire. However, Putin had previously rejected such a proposal, stating that he seeks long-term peace, not temporary halts.

Meanwhile, Zelensky warned that Ukraine cannot guarantee the safety of foreign guests attending the May 9 events in Moscow, as the war with Russia continues.
