Ronen Bar, the head of Israel’s internal intelligence agency, Shin Bet, has announced his resignation following weeks of conflict with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu over the military operations in Gaza. He declared his decision on Monday, April 28, stating that he will step down on June 15.
In a statement released by the security agency, Ronen Bar said, “I am concluding my 35-year career in service. I have decided to resign on June 15. During this time, a suitable and professional successor will be selected and entrusted with the role.”
Shin Bet, which investigates anti-terrorism activities, has found itself at the center of increasing political tension. The agency played a leading investigative role after Hamas launched an unprecedented terror attack from Gaza on October 7, 2023. Since then, Shin Bet has faced criticism from Netanyahu’s far-right coalition, as well as from members of the security establishment and families of hostages held in Gaza.
On March 16, Netanyahu publicly stated that he had lost confidence in Ronen Bar long ago and suggested that his continued presence could negatively impact counter-terrorism efforts and the safety of government officials.
Following this, Netanyahu attempted to dismiss Bar, but widespread protests and strong public opposition forced him to retreat from the decision. Later, Israel’s Supreme Court issued a stay order against the dismissal attempt.
