Ceasefire in Gaza may be announced at any time

The possibility of a ceasefire between the Palestinian armed group Hamas and occupying Israel has become increasingly strong. Mediator Qatar may announce the ceasefire at any time.

On Tuesday (January 14), British media outlet BBC reported that all parties have reached an agreement on the points of contention regarding the ceasefire. Now, the final details of the announcement are being prepared. The media further stated that an official announcement from Qatar is expected very soon.

The BBC also reported that Hamas and Israeli negotiators are currently in the same building in Doha, Qatar. Indirect discussions are taking place between them, which means a ceasefire could be imminent.

The draft of the ceasefire agreement has been leaked to Israeli media. It reveals that the agreement will be implemented in three phases.

In the first phase, Hamas will release 33 Israeli hostages, including female Israeli soldiers. In exchange, Israel will release 50 Palestinian prisoners for each female soldier and 30 Palestinian prisoners for each civilian.

Israeli media also reported that Israeli forces will completely withdraw from the Philadelphi Corridor (the Gaza-Egypt border). This will take place toward the end of the first phase of the agreement.

The second phase will begin on the 16th day of the agreement’s implementation. During this phase, discussions will focus on releasing the remaining Israeli soldiers and men held hostage in Gaza.

The third phase will involve discussions on a long-term plan. This includes establishing an alternative administration in Gaza and rebuilding the area.

Additionally, the agreement places significant emphasis on security. Under the agreement, Israeli forces will allow one million Palestinians in northern Gaza to return to their homes. However, international monitoring teams will ensure that Hamas or any other armed group does not bring weapons into the area.
