A speeding car plowed into a crowd in Mannheim, a city in western Germany, killing at least one person and injuring at least 25 others. The incident occurred on Monday in a busy area of the city, according to local police.
The driver of the vehicle has been detained. It is not yet clear whether there were other suspects involved. Authorities have advised people to avoid the city center.
A witness reported seeing people lying on the ground, and at least two individuals were resuscitated on the spot. According to a report from the German newspaper “Bild,” two people were killed and 25 injured in the incident.
It is unclear whether the driver intentionally drove into the crowd or if the incident is related to Germany’s ongoing Carnival celebrations. Local media outlet “Mannheim 24” reported that a black car sped into people moving from Paradeplatz Square toward the Water Tower in the city center.
Germany has experienced similar incidents in recent months, including deadly vehicle attacks in Magdeburg last December and in Munich last month. An earlier stabbing incident in Mannheim in May 2024 has also contributed to growing security concerns in the country.
