The addiction to synthetic cannabis has reached an alarming level in the Bangladeshi-populated areas of Tower Hamlets and Whitechapel in East London. Illegally produced vape juice and counterfeit CBD vapes are being openly sold. Investigations by Bangla Tribune have revealed that these drugs are being locally manufactured using various harmful chemicals.
What is Synthetic Cannabis?
Synthetic cannabis, scientifically known as Synthetic Cannabinoid Receptor Agonists, mimics the effects of natural cannabis. It is similar to psychedelic drugs like LSD, often causing hallucinations. These chemicals are created to replicate the effects of natural cannabis.
Spread of Synthetic Cannabis in the UK
Following the legalization of cannabis in several U.S. states, the sale of synthetic cannabis-based vapes and vape liquids has increased in the UK. In the U.S., unregulated cannabis vaping has led to fatal incidents. THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol) and CBD (Cannabidiol) vape users are becoming dangerously addicted.
CBD is a naturally occurring compound in cannabis plants, widely marketed as an alternative treatment for pain relief. However, experts warn that many CBD products may contain higher-than-permitted levels of chemicals, and some even include harmful substances.
UK experts have raised concerns that THC vape users risk inhaling Xylazine, a highly toxic substance used as a sedative for large animals like horses and cattle. The consequences of human consumption can be extremely harmful.
Health Risks
Synthetic cannabis users are experiencing severe health problems, including liver infections, dental issues, and throat infections. Experts warn that this addiction could be devastating for the younger generation.
The use of these drugs has reached a worrying level among both young and middle-aged British-Bangladeshis. Some users claim that consuming synthetic cannabis gives them temporary physical and sexual stimulation.
However, synthetic cannabis is far more harmful than natural cannabis. It can cause paranoia, hallucinations, and severe mental health issues.
Dr. Anwara Ali, a British-Bangladeshi physician, stated, “Even regular vaping is harmful to health. Cannabis or synthetic cannabis-infused vapes are even more dangerous. Awareness in society is essential regarding this issue.”
UK Government’s Legal Action
To control new types of drugs, the UK’s Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs has proposed classifying Xylazine as a Class C drug. If approved, possession could lead to a two-year prison sentence, while selling it could result in a 14-year sentence.
