BRICS countries have no plans or interest in weakening the U.S. dollar, according to India’s Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar. He made this statement during an event in Doha, Qatar, on Saturday, December 7. The news was reported by the British news agency Reuters.
Jaishankar’s comments came in the context of threats made by newly elected U.S. President Donald Trump to the BRICS nations. Trump had warned that if BRICS countries pursued the creation of a new currency or supported an alternative to the U.S. dollar, they would face a 100% tariff.
The BRICS group includes India, Russia, China, and several other emerging economies.
Earlier, Russia’s Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Pankin had stated that the BRICS settlement system would continue to move forward.
