Biden Cancels $4.2 Billion in Student Loans, Marking $180 Billion in Total Forgiveness During His Presidency

US President Joe Biden’s administration has announced the cancellation of an additional $4.2 billion in student loans, benefiting approximately 55,000 borrowers across the country. This latest move, declared just weeks before Biden’s term concludes, underscores his commitment to alleviating student debt burdens for millions of Americans. The total amount of student loan forgiveness during his presidency has now reached an impressive $180 billion, according to the Department of Education.
A White House statement emphasized that the relief is aimed at public service workers, including teachers, nurses, and law enforcement officers. “Because of our actions, millions of people across the country now have the breathing room to start businesses, save for retirement, and pursue life plans they had to put on hold because of the burden of student loan debt,” the statement read.
Since taking office, President Biden has prioritized addressing the student loan crisis, which has left many Americans struggling under crushing debt. Nearly five million borrowers have benefited from debt relief initiatives during his tenure. Friday’s announcement is expected to be the final round of public service loan forgiveness under his administration, marking a significant chapter in his efforts to reform student debt policies.
In 2022, Biden introduced a groundbreaking forgiveness program designed to cancel up to $20,000 for certain borrowers and $10,000 for the majority of others. However, the conservative-majority Supreme Court struck down the plan, arguing that the president exceeded his authority given the scale of the proposed relief.
Despite this setback, Biden vowed to continue the fight for student debt relief. His administration has since implemented targeted measures, focusing on expanding eligibility and simplifying processes for borrowers. Among these efforts was the revision of rules governing the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program, which previously faced criticism for its high rejection rate and complex requirements.
The cost of higher education in the United States remains a significant financial challenge for many families. Tuition fees can range from $10,000 to $70,000 annually, often leaving graduates burdened with substantial debt as they enter the workforce. According to the Pew Research Center, one in four American adults under 40 carries student loan debt, with median amounts ranging from $20,000 to $25,000 as of 2023.
The Biden administration’s actions have provided critical relief for many borrowers, but the broader issue of student debt continues to spark debate nationwide. As Biden prepares to leave office, his legacy on student loan forgiveness reflects both his achievements and the challenges that remain in addressing this complex issue.
