Bangladesh’s Interest in Pakistan’s ‘JF-17 Thunder’

Bangladesh has expressed interest in Pakistan’s advanced JF-17 Thunder fighter jet. To strengthen military ties and discuss the details of this aircraft, a high-level defense delegation from Bangladesh has visited Pakistan.

On Wednesday (January 15), Pakistan’s Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) released this information, as reported by the Pakistani news outlet Express Tribune.

According to the report, the meeting took place at the Air Force Headquarters in Islamabad, where both Bangladesh and Pakistan discussed ways to enhance military cooperation and reaffirmed their commitment to work together to strengthen ties between their air forces.

The report further stated that the Bangladeshi delegation, led by Lieutenant General Kamrul Hasan, held a significant meeting with Pakistan Air Force Chief, Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmed Babar Sidhu.

Lieutenant General Kamrul Hasan praised Pakistan’s modern military technology and initiatives, particularly highlighting Bangladesh’s interest in the production of the JF-17 Thunder fighter jet, a joint venture between Pakistan and China.

Pakistan Air Force Chief, Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmed, emphasized expanding joint training and military cooperation opportunities with Bangladesh.

Additionally, the meeting stressed enhancing military collaboration and strengthening bilateral relations between Pakistan and Bangladesh.

Notably, the JF-17 Thunder is a state-of-the-art multirole fighter jet capable of performing various attack missions. It is jointly developed by Pakistan Aeronautical Complex (PAC) and China’s Chengdu Aircraft Industry Corporation.

The fighter jet can conduct operations day and night, engage in dogfights, and gather intelligence by entering enemy airspace. Its relatively low weight allows for high-speed operations. The aircraft is used by Pakistan and several other countries. If the JF-17 Thunder is added to Bangladesh’s military fleet, it could become a significant military asset.
