Bangladeshi Surveillance Drones Spotted Near Meghalaya Border, Prompting Security Concerns
Shillong – Bangladeshi Bayraktar TB2 unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) were reportedly spotted flying close to Cherrapunjee and Shella in Meghalaya, raising security concerns along the India-Bangladesh border.
According to high-level sources, the drones, equipped with advanced surveillance capabilities, flew approximately 200 meters south of the zero line near Cherrapunjee and Shella, north of Chhatak and Sunamganj in Bangladesh. The sightings coincided with a musical concert in Shillong featuring Canadian singer Bryan Adams, diverting public attention.
One UAV, identified by its transponder code TB2R1071, was reportedly operated from Bangladesh’s Tejgaon Airbase. Another similar UAV was previously intercepted by Indian Air Force radars near the West Bengal border, suggesting a pattern of intensified drone activity along the 4,096 km-long India-Bangladesh border.
The Turkish-made Bayraktar TB2 drones are medium-altitude, long-endurance UAVs with sophisticated surveillance equipment, including high-definition video and thermal imaging capabilities. They can also carry precision-guided munitions, making them suitable for tactical operations.
Context and Security Implications
The drone activity comes shortly after Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri’s visit to Dhaka, during which critical bilateral issues were discussed. It also follows recent sightings of similar UAVs near South Tripura and Western Mizoram, further heightening tensions along the border.
While the Indian Ministry of External Affairs has yet to comment on the incidents, security forces remain on high alert to prevent any subversive activities. Defense experts have stressed the need for enhanced vigilance and countermeasures to address the evolving security challenges.
This escalation occurs amid growing anti-India rhetoric in Bangladesh, reportedly fueled by Jamaat-e-Islami’s influence. Observers note the irony of this hostility, given India’s pivotal role in Bangladesh’s liberation during the 1971 war.
Authorities are closely monitoring the situation, emphasizing the importance of preparedness to safeguard India’s borders and address potential threats.
