Bangladesh Restricts Visa Issuance for Indians at Kolkata Mission

The Bangladesh government has imposed restrictions on visa issuance for Indian nationals at its Deputy High Commission in Kolkata, according to reports from Bangla daily Samakal. The directive came through a confidential letter issued on Thursday and was implemented the following day.

The restrictions are currently limited to the Kolkata mission, with no similar measures imposed at Bangladesh’s missions in Delhi or Assam. However, foreign ministry officials indicated that the limitations could be expanded depending on the situation.

The move comes amid staffing shortages caused by the indefinite recall of the heads of Bangladesh’s Agartala and Kolkata missions earlier this week. While Shabab Bin Ahmed, currently posted at the Bangladeshi embassy in The Hague, has been reassigned to the Kolkata mission, officials noted that his arrival could be delayed.

The reason behind the decision has not been disclosed, leaving speculations about its potential implications for India-Bangladesh relations.
