Bangladesh Media Faces Controlled Journalism, Not Free Journalism

On the anniversary of Bangladesh’s leading daily Manab Zamin, the newspaper released a discussion featuring its editor-in-chief, Matiur Rahman Chowdhury, on its YouTube channel. During the conversation, he responded to various questions from chief news editor Sajedul Haque.

Matiur Rahman stated, “I have never seen the media landscape change the way it is now. We are still under controlled journalism, not free journalism.

Breaking out of this situation is a major challenge. But since we are not united, we are unable to overcome it.”

He further shared, “A Western diplomat once told me that if all journalists in Bangladesh come together and agree to call white ‘white’ and black ‘black,’ the country will change within three days. Journalists themselves have eliminated the middle ground. They either take sides or oppose—there is no in-between.”
