Bangladesh: Former Chhatra League Leader Attends Mother’s Funeral in Handcuffs

Jahangir Hossain, the former vice-president of the municipal Chhatra League in Chuadanga, Bangladesh, attended his mother’s funeral and burial while still wearing handcuffs.The Daily Star of leading newspaper in Bangladesh published a news on this regards.

Despite being temporarily released on parole following his mother’s death, the handcuffs were not removed during the funeral. Jahangir even carried his mother’s body to the cemetery while restrained.

The Daily Star stated that
On Tuesday at 4 PM, Jahangir was released on a four-hour parole. Earlier that morning, at around 9 AM, Jahangir’s mother, Aleya Khatun (70), passed away at their home in Kedar Ganj, Chuadanga Sadar.

Chuadanga Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Khaledur Rahman stated that Jahangir had been in custody since November 12. He was arrested on August 5 in connection with a clash.

“Today ( December 10), a police team from the police lines brought him home on parole. We are still investigating the exact circumstances of what happened there,” said OC Rahman.

Jahangir’s uncle, Alauddin, told, “My sister had previously suffered a stroke. She likely passed away from another stroke around 9 AM today.”

He added, “We are satisfied that Jahangir was able to join the funeral and pray for his mother.”

When contacted, Chuadanga Superintendent of Police Khondker Golam Mowla said, “I am not fully aware of the details of how the handcuffs were kept on, but according to regulations, they should not be entirely removed.”

Photos of Jahangir wearing handcuffs during the funeral circulated widely on social media, sparking criticism of law enforcement for not removing the restraints.
