Bangladesh’s Chief Advisor to the interim government, Dr. Muhammad Yunus, has cancelled his scheduled trip to Paris next month, according to official sources in Dhaka.
Dr. Yunus was expected to attend the United Nations Ocean Conference in the French capital in June. Alongside the summit, he had expressed interest in holding a bilateral meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron to discuss key diplomatic and development issues. The Bangladesh Embassy in Paris had formally communicated this request to the French authorities on behalf of the Chief Advisor.
However, sources say that President Macron declined the proposed meeting. Following this development, Dr. Yunus decided to cancel his Paris visit altogether, according to high-level government officials.
The cancellation highlights a missed opportunity for direct diplomatic engagement between Bangladesh’s interim leadership and France at a critical time. Dr. Yunus, a Nobel Peace Prize laureate, has been serving as the Chief Advisor of the caretaker government, steering the country through a sensitive transitional phase.
The United Nations Ocean Conference will proceed as planned in June, gathering global leaders and experts to discuss pressing marine and environmental issues—but Bangladesh will now be represented by other officials in Dr. Yunus’s absence.
