Bangladesh Awami League Rejects the Biased Report by the UN Fact-Finding Mission

In July-August of the past year, a meticulously designed conspiracy involving both domestic and foreign forces led to the overthrow of a democratically elected government under the leadership of Sheikh Hasina. As part of this meticulous design, hundreds of people were killed. The UN Fact-Finding Mission has now released a report on the incidents surrounding this anti-government movement. On behalf of the Bangladesh Awami League, we firmly believe that this report has been published without maintaining sufficient objectivity and neutrality, which is a matter of grave concern. The report is clearly biased and prepared based on information provided by the fascist Yunus government. Furthermore, it was released before the scheduled time at the government’s request.

On February 14, 2025 (local time), the Bangladesh Awami League issued this statement through its verified Facebook page.

Press Release:

The report by the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) of the United Nations covers the period from July 1 to August 15. However, the peak of the movement began after July 14. Through a deep conspiracy, after toppling the government led by Sheikh Hasina, Awami League leaders and activists were subjected to brutal attacks and killings. Their homes, businesses, and properties were vandalized, looted, and set on fire, and this oppression continues. This illegal and unconstitutional government has established a reign of state terrorism and is continuously violating human rights with impunity. However, despite including the 14 days prior to the movement, the report selectively covers only up to August 15, completely ignoring the massacres, rapes, and other terrorist acts that took place after the government was ousted, which warrants further investigation.

Although the illegitimate government repeatedly claimed that over 2,000 protesters were killed in the movement, the report states that 1,400 people died during the mentioned period. However, the report does not specify how many of them were protesters, how many were Awami League activists, and how many were police officers. It also fails to mention where and how they were killed. There is no forensic report or professional identity list of the deceased. Meanwhile, since August 5, Awami League leaders and activists have been facing an ongoing massacre, yet these incidents have not been adequately highlighted in the report. The government has instilled an atmosphere of fear, preventing victims from coming forward, which suggests that many incidents remain unreported. This omission makes the published report entirely unacceptable.

Additionally, the fascist government, which has granted impunity to those responsible for the massacres of Hindu, Buddhist, Christian, and other minority groups, has failed to address these crimes in the report.

In reality, the murderous fascist Yunus government has hired lobbyists using taxpayers’ money to publish such a biased report, shifting the blame onto the Awami League government to justify its legitimacy. Evidence now clearly shows that the July movement was not just a student protest for demands but a broader effort to overthrow the government, with BNP-Jamaat secretly orchestrating the unrest. Protesters relied more on terrorism than public mobilization, attacking and vandalizing key state institutions, committing arson, and engaging in killings and destruction. Yet, the report fails to mention these aspects.

Many police officers were killed while trying to contain this violent and terrorist movement. However, the report completely ignores the fact that police officers have the right to self-defense while protecting lives and public property. The OHCHR has a history of publishing biased reports aimed at tarnishing the image of governments, leading to past instances where countries withdrew from the UN Human Rights Council. Former US President Donald Trump withdrew the United States from the UNHRC in 2018 due to such actions, and on February 4, 2025, the United States once again withdrew from the UNHRC. If the US President himself cannot trust such organizations, how can we?

We strongly reject this biased report and vehemently protest the direct accusations against our honorable Prime Minister, the daughter of democracy, Sheikh Hasina. We believe this is part of a blueprint to destroy Bangladesh’s democratic system. We demand that the UNHRC refrain from bias and conduct a more thorough, objective, and neutral investigation to publish an accurate report. This will help restore the trust of the people of Bangladesh and the international community in such organizations.
