Bangladesh Army Puts Lt Gen Faizur Rahman Under Surveillance Over Alleged Coup Plot

Dhaka, March 11, 2025 – A senior Bangladeshi military official, Lieutenant General Faizur Rahman, has been placed under surveillance over allegations of attempting to stage a coup within the Bangladesh Army, sources told India Today. The order was issued by Army Chief General Waker-Uz-Zaman after intelligence reports flagged suspicious activities by Faizur Rahman, a known Jamaat-e-Islami sympathizer.

According to sources, Lt Gen Rahman, who serves as the Quarter Master General (QMG), had been holding secret meetings with divisional commanders in an alleged bid to replace the acting Army Chief. The Chief’s secretariat became aware of these gatherings, which were reportedly convened without official approval. When top military officials were warned about the meetings, they distanced themselves from the initiative, leading to its failure.

Investigations revealed that in the first two months of 2025, Lt Gen Faizur Rahman had also engaged in multiple meetings with Pakistani diplomats and Jamaat-e-Islami leaders. These interactions raised serious concerns within the military establishment, prompting heightened surveillance on the senior officer.

The developments come amid a surge in political unrest and violence in Bangladesh. Protests have escalated in recent months, with rioters targeting properties linked to former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s family. Notably, her father Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s historic residence in Dhaka was also vandalized.

Last month, Army Chief Waker-Uz-Zaman publicly acknowledged the deteriorating law and order situation, attributing it to political instability. He also emphasized the need for unity within the armed forces, stating, “The anarchy we have witnessed is of our own making.”

The situation remains tense as authorities continue to monitor the security landscape, particularly within the military ranks, to prevent further destabilization.
