The Chamber Judge Court has suspended the bail granted by the High Court to former ISKCON leader Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari in a sedition case.
The order was passed on Tuesday (May 6) by the Chamber Judge Court of the Appellate Division, led by Justice Md. Rezaul Haque, following a hearing on the state’s appeal against the High Court’s bail order.
Advocate MK Rahman represented Chinmoy Krishna Das, while Additional Attorney General Barrister Anik R Haque and Arshadur Rauf represented the state.
Earlier, on April 30, the High Court granted bail to Chinmoy Krishna Das. However, the state quickly filed an application seeking suspension of the bail order. The same day, the Chamber Judge Court initially suspended the bail and later scheduled a new date for further hearing.
The state’s lawyers mentioned that the Chamber Judge decided to hear arguments from the accused’s counsel before issuing a final order.
Notably, on October 25, 2024, a large religious gathering of the Hindu community took place in Chattogram under the leadership of Chinmoy Krishna Das. A few days later, on October 31, a sedition case was filed against him for allegedly dishonoring the national flag. Eighteen others were also accused in the case.
Chinmoy Krishna Das was arrested in Dhaka on November 25, 2024. The following day, his bail petition was rejected, and the Chattogram Metropolitan Magistrate ordered his imprisonment.
Following the court order, a clash broke out in Chattogram between law enforcement and Chinmoy’s followers, resulting in the murder of government prosecutor Saiful Islam Alif outside the court premises. Since then, Chinmoy has remained in jail. On January 2, 2025, his bail application was also rejected by the Chattogram Metropolitan Sessions Judge Court. He later filed a bail appeal with the High Court
