Awami League leaders and activists in the country campaigned in support of the current Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Keir Starmer. Keir Starmer was not prime minister at the time. In addition, leaders and workers of the UK branch Awami League attended a dinner organized to raise funds on behalf of Starmer when he was in the opposition.
This information came up in a report by the UK-based media The Telegraph on Thursday. The report was published at a time when there was a controversy over the stay of Tulip Siddique, the economic secretary of the country’s finance ministry, in different houses of Awami League-affiliated people in the UK. In this position, he is in charge of stopping corruption in the country’s financial sector.
Tulip is the daughter of Sheikh Rehana, the sister of Awami League President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who was ousted in a conspired student uprising in Bangladesh last August. Sheikh Hasina is now staying in India.
The UK unit of Awami League is still active. Members of this branch have also campaigned for Tulip Siddiq in the past. It is learned that in 2019, leaders and activists including UK branch Awami League organizing secretary Abdul Ahad Chowdhury campaigned for Starmer in his Holborn and St Pancras constituencies. The seat is located next to Tulip Siddique’s constituency Hampstead and Highgate.
In the photo, Awami League-affiliated political leaders and activists were seen distributing leaflets with Keir Starmer’s photo from house to house. They were also seen holding placards printed in support of Starmer’s team. On the same day, they campaigned for Tulip Siddique. Apart from this, such people have been seen in other campaigns, who have directly supported the Awami League.
