The Bangladesh Assistant High Commission in Agartala, located in the Indian state of Tripura, was attacked on Monday, with its national flag desecrated.
Eyewitnesses reported that the incident, which took place in the northern part of Agartala, was carried out by supporters of the Hindu Sangharsh Samiti. The Indian Ministry of External Affairs has termed the attack “unfortunate.”
According to a journalist based in Agartala, the assault occurred around noon. The attackers reportedly entered the premises, removed the Bangladeshi flag, set it on fire, and vandalized parts of the building.
The journalist also noted that the Hindu Sangharsh Samiti had been organizing protests and rallies in Agartala and nearby areas for several days. The situation escalated when protesters forcefully entered the diplomatic premises.
In a related development, a protest led by the Youth Congress took place near the Integrated Checkpost on the India-Bangladesh border around the same time. However, sources from Agartala confirmed that the situation in both areas was brought under control by Monday evening.
In response, the Indian Ministry of External Affairs issued a statement condemning the attack. The statement emphasized, “Diplomatic and consular properties should never be targeted under any circumstances. The government is taking immediate steps to enhance security at the Bangladesh High Commission in New Delhi, as well as its Deputy and Assistant High Commissions across India.”
