Oscar-winning actress Anne Hathaway has landed the lead role in the upcoming movie adaptation of Verity, a thriller by bestselling author Colleen Hoover. According to Deadline, Hathaway will star in the film, which is based on Hoover’s popular novel of the same name.
This new project will reunite Hathaway with director Michael Showalter, who previously worked with her on the Amazon MGM film The Idea of You.
Verity tells the story of Lowen Ashleigh, a struggling writer on the brink of financial collapse, who receives an offer she can’t refuse. Jeremy Crawford, the husband of best-selling crime author Verity Crawford (Hathaway), hires Lowen to finish the remaining books in his wife’s popular series after a mysterious accident leaves Verity unable to complete them.
As Lowen becomes more familiar with the Crawford family and their lavish estate, she begins to question everything she’s been told. When she uncovers an unfinished manuscript that reveals chilling details about the family’s past, Lowen must decide whether there’s more to Verity’s story than meets the eye.
At this stage, Hathaway is the only actor confirmed for the film, with additional casting announcements expected soon.
Verity is one of two Colleen Hoover novels being adapted into films. The 2019 novel Regretting You is also being turned into a movie, starring Mckenna Grace (from Ghostbusters and The Handmaid’s Tale) and Allison Williams (Girls). The film will explore a complex mother-daughter relationship, with Williams playing Grace’s mother.
Both projects were green-lit after the success of this year’s It Ends With Us movie, based on Hoover’s 2016 novel. The film, starring Blake Lively, earned $309 million in global ticket sales, solidifying Hoover’s books as a hit for the big screen.
