Andrew Garfield Wants ‘Very Strange’ Return as Spider-Man

Andrew Garfield has expressed his interest in returning as Spider-Man, but with a caveat: the story would need to be something truly unique and creative. The actor, who portrayed the web-slinger in The Amazing Spider-Man (2012) and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014), as well as making a fan-favorite return in Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021), revealed at the Middle East Film & Comic Con that any potential return must come with a “very strange” concept.

“It would have to be very weird,” Garfield explained. “I would like to do something very strange. Something very unique, offbeat, and surprising—kind of like the creative freedom they have with the animated Spider-Verse movies.”

Garfield’s remarks come after his character’s abrupt exit from the franchise following The Amazing Spider-Man 2, which performed poorly at the box office. This led to a partnership between Sony and Disney, allowing Spider-Man to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Tom Holland taking over the role in 2017’s Spider-Man: Homecoming. However, Garfield’s return in No Way Home—which grossed $1.9 billion worldwide—proved that fans are still eager for his iteration of the character.

The actor, a two-time Oscar nominee, told Esquire last year that he was left “dangling” when his Spider-Man run was cut short, and he’s now open to returning under the right conditions. “If it’s additive to the culture, if there’s a great concept or something that hasn’t been done before, that’s unique and odd and exciting, I would 100% come back,” Garfield said. “I love that character, and it brings joy. If part of what I bring is joy, then I’m joyful in return.”

Despite the ongoing rumors of Garfield reprising his role in Spider-Man 4 alongside Holland, Garfield recently clarified with GQ UK that he has not signed on for the project. “I’m gonna disappoint you. Yeah, no,” he said, acknowledging that fans may not believe him.

Garfield also joked about future plans, humorously adding, “Maybe I’m gonna have like five kids at some point, and I’m gonna need to start saving up for the school tuition or something.”

Meanwhile, Holland’s next Spider-Man movie, titled Spider-Man: Brand New Day, is set to release on July 31, 2026.
