Ambani Announces Massive Investment in India’s Seven Sisters Region

The Voice News : Mukesh Ambani, one of the world’s richest individuals and a leading Indian industrialist, has announced a massive investment of ₹750 billion (75,000 crore rupees) across various sectors in India’s northeastern Seven Sisters region. He stated that the investment will be made over the next five years through his company, Reliance Group of Industries.

The announcement was made during the Rising Northeast Investor Summit, held on Friday in New Delhi. Addressing the summit, Ambani said, “Over the past four decades, Reliance has invested ₹300 billion (30,000 crore rupees) across various sectors in the seven northeastern states. We are committed to further strengthening this region and will invest an additional ₹750 billion over the next five years.”

While the investment spans multiple sectors, Ambani emphasized that Reliance will initially prioritize the expansion of electricity services in the Seven Sisters.

“We will focus on increasing the production and usage of solar energy in the region. Hundreds of factories will be established across the area. These factories will require land, and Reliance has already initiated a land acquisition plan. Currently, much of the northeast remains underutilized, but soon it will become a land of prosperity,” he added.

The term Seven Sisters refers to the seven northeastern Indian states: Assam, Tripura, Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh, and Meghalaya. Compared to other Indian states, this region lags behind economically, infrastructurally, and educationally. Dominated by tribal communities, these states are also geographically isolated from mainland India.

Since India’s independence from British colonial rule in 1947, the Seven Sisters region has experienced decades of separatist movements. However, the situation has largely stabilized since the 2000s.

A few months ago, Dr. Muhammad Yunus, Chief Adviser of Bangladesh’s interim government, discussed the possibility of forming a commercial hub linking Bangladesh and the Seven Sisters region during a conversation with China. However, diplomatic relations between Bangladesh and India have since deteriorated.
