Alicia Silverstone Returns as Cher in Clueless Sequel Series After 30 Years

Alicia Silverstone is dusting off her iconic yellow plaid and stepping back into the role that made her a pop culture legend. Nearly 30 years after the original Clueless hit theaters, Silverstone is set to reprise her role as Cher Horowitz in a sequel TV series currently in development at Peacock.

Silverstone confirmed the news with a nostalgic Instagram post, writing, “Totally buggin’… in the best way,” alongside throwback images from the 1995 teen classic. The series will act as a continuation of the original film, not a reboot, and features major names behind the scenes.

Gossip Girl creators Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage are writing the new series alongside Jordan Weiss (Dollface), with original director Amy Heckerling returning as executive producer. Silverstone and original producer Robert Lawrence are also attached to the project.

This isn’t Peacock’s first attempt to revive Clueless. A 2020 reboot centered around Dionne never took off, in part due to the absence of Cher herself.

Originally released in 1995 and inspired by Jane Austen’s Emma, Clueless became a defining movie of the ’90s, starring Silverstone alongside Stacey Dash, the late Brittany Murphy, and Paul Rudd. Its legacy lives on through fashion, slang, and frequent pop culture callbacks—including Silverstone’s own TikToks and a viral 2023 Super Bowl ad.

Plot details for the sequel series are still under wraps, but fans can expect a fresh, modern take on Cher’s world—now likely filtered through the lens of adulthood, motherhood, or perhaps a Beverly Hills version of being “way existential.”

Whatever the direction, one thing’s for sure: Cher is still totally iconic.
