Angus MacInnes, the Canadian actor widely recognized for his roles in Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope (1977) and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016), has passed away at the age of 77. MacInnes’ family confirmed his death on December 23, sharing that he died peacefully, surrounded by loved ones. The cause of death has not yet been disclosed.
MacInnes gained fame for portraying the character of Gold Leader/ Jon “Dutch” Vander in A New Hope, one of the Rebel pilots in the iconic battle against the Death Star. He later reprised this role in the 2016 Rogue One prequel. In a heartfelt tribute, MacInnes’ family shared that he “touched countless lives” through his work and took great pride in being part of the Star Wars legacy.
“Angus was more than an actor—he was a kind, thoughtful, and generous soul who brought warmth and humor into the lives of everyone who knew him,” his family said. “He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, fellow actors, and fans around the world.”
Born on October 27, 1947, in Ontario, Canada, MacInnes began his acting career in the 1970s, with his first notable film role in Rollerball (1975). His career spanned multiple decades, with appearances in a wide variety of films and TV series, including Space: 1999 (1977), Witness (1985), Hellboy (2004), The Black Dahlia (2006), Vikings (2013), and Captain Phillips (2013).
MacInnes was known for his deep connection with Star Wars fans. The family statement highlighted his love for attending conventions, meeting fans, and sharing in their passion for the saga. “He was continually humbled and honored by the admiration and passion of the fans and convention community,” they added.
MacInnes leaves behind a legacy that will continue to inspire and resonate with fans for generations to come.
