In Bangladesh, a nationwide strike has been observed in protest of rising commodity prices and the suppression of Awami League leaders and activists. From early Saturday morning, Awami League activists in various parts of the country participated in the strike.
In Barguna, picketing in support of the strike was observed on Sadar Road.
In the Kismat railway station area of Atwari Upazila, Panchagarh, Awami League activists obstructed the railway by placing tree logs on the tracks, bringing train services to a halt.
On the Dhaka-Shyamganj Road near Kashiganj, Awami League activists picketed early in the morning.
In Chandura, Gazipur, local activists were seen picketing in support of the strike. In Ishwarganj, under the leadership of General Secretary Riyad Hasan, Chhatra League activists held a protest rally in support of the strike.
On the previous night, a protest rally in support of the strike was led by Awami League leader Sujon Ahmed in Habiganj. On Friday, in Mymensingh, 70 motorcycles were seized by joint forces on suspicion of being used to enforce the strike on behalf of the Awami League. That same evening, on the Dhaka-Chandpur Highway’s Daudkandi-Matlab Road, local Awami League activists blocked the road in support of the strike.
Meanwhile, in Pabna, Chhatra League members held a rally in favor of the strike. Protest marches were also reported in Brahmanbaria and Chattogram.
Additionally, scattered incidents of road blockades by Awami League activists were reported in various parts of the country on Saturday as part of the strike program.
