NATO Launches Baltic Sentry Mission to Enhance Maritime Surveillance

BRUSSELS – NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte announced a new mission, Baltic Sentry, aimed at bolstering maritime presence and surveillance in the Baltic Sea. The mission will deploy a range of assets, including frigates, maritime patrol aircraft, and cutting-edge naval drones1.

Rutte emphasized the critical importance of protecting undersea cables, which secure over 95% of global internet traffic and facilitate an estimated $10 trillion in financial transactions daily. The mission enjoys the direct support of Finland, Estonia, Denmark, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, and Sweden1.

This initiative is part of NATO’s ongoing efforts to counter destabilizing acts and ensure the safety of vital infrastructure. Rutte stated, “We will do everything in our power to fight back and prevent any threats to our critical infrastructure.”

The Baltic Sentry mission will enhance vigilance in the Baltic Sea and provide a robust response to potential threats. Rutte highlighted the importance of international cooperation and robust enforcement to safeguard the region’s security1.
