Progress in Gaza peace talks, but no agreement yet

Qatar, the United States and Egypt are trying to reach a ceasefire agreement to end the 15-month-old war in Gaza.

U.S. and Arab negotiators have made some progress in trying to broker a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, the Palestinian liberation group in Gaza. But that’s not enough to reach an agreement. Some officials involved in the talks said this.

Negotiations are underway in Qatar. Meanwhile, 17 people were killed in Israeli military strikes across Gaza on Thursday, Palestinian medics said.

A total of 70 Palestinians have been killed in Israeli strikes in Gaza in the past 24 hours, according to the Gaza Health Ministry.
Qatar, the United States and Egypt are trying to reach a ceasefire agreement to end the 15-month-long loss of life and destruction in Gaza and to free the remaining hostages held by Hamas.

Negotiators are trying to reach a ceasefire agreement before US President Joe Biden leaves. US President-elect Donald Trump has already warned of serious consequences if the hostages are not released by the time he is sworn in on January 20.

“Detailed negotiations are ongoing,” said a Palestinian official familiar with the talks on Thursday. Mediators and negotiators are talking about every word, every detail. There has been some progress in bridging the existing old gap. However, no deal has been struck yet. ”

On Tuesday, Israel said it was fully committed to reaching a ceasefire agreement. But in this case, they are facing resistance from Hamas.

Peace talks between Israel and Hamas have been deadlocked for a year over two key issues.

Hamas says it will release all remaining hostages only if Israel stops fighting and withdraws all troops from Gaza. Israel says it will not stop fighting until Hamas is cleared and all hostages are free.
