The son of the newly elected US president, however, said before arriving in Greenland that his visit was personal.
US President-elect Donald Trump expressed interest in buying Greenland, an autonomous region of Denmark, two weeks ago. His eldest son, Donald Trump Jr., has set foot in Greenland.
Trump’s son, however, said before arriving in the Greenland capital that his visit was personal. He is visiting Greenland as a tourist.
Trump Jr. noted that his purpose is to talk to the people. He has no plans to meet with government officials.
In December, Trump said in a statement that “ownership and control of Greenland is vital to the national security of the United States.” By saying this, he provoked a new controversy.
Trump also expressed interest in buying this Arctic island country in his first term as US President. Greenland’s prime minister has twice strongly protested. “Greenland is not for sale, Greenland is for the people of Greenland,” he said.
Greenland has a population of 57,000. Although the country has autonomy, it relies heavily on subsidies from Copenhagen. Greenland remains therefore a part of the Kingdom of Denmark, albeit autonomous.
The Danish government did not say much about the visit of Trump Jr., the president-elect’s son. However, the country’s Foreign Ministry has clarified that this is not an official visit.
The ministry told the BBC: “We have taken note of Donald Trump Jr’s visit to Greenland. Since this is not an official state visit to the United States, Denmark’s Foreign Ministry will not comment further on the matter. ”
