Reasons Behind Justin Trudeau’s Fall

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who was at the peak of international political popularity a decade ago, announced his resignation on Monday, stepping down as the leader of the ruling party and Prime Minister before the end of his term. Trudeau made this decision amidst growing dissatisfaction within his party. He announced his decision during a press conference outside his residence, Rideau Cottage, in Ottawa.

But how did a once-popular politician fall into such a crisis? Turkish media outlet TRT World published an analytical report examining why Trudeau’s popularity plummeted so drastically.

Rising Costs

In 2024, inflation in Canada began to significantly impact daily life. With the rising cost of essential goods and housing, public frustration grew. Trudeau’s government failed to take effective measures to address this crisis, which increased dissatisfaction among voters.

Environmental Policies

Trudeau’s Liberal Party faced widespread criticism over environmental policies. The government was accused of failing to take effective steps to combat the climate crisis. Increasing climate-related disasters tarnished his image as an “environmentally-friendly” leader.

Federal Budget

The federal budget proposal faced criticism from both his own party and the opposition. Progressive groups felt their demands were ignored, portraying Trudeau as a leader “disconnected” from the public.

Public Health Management

Trudeau’s government was criticized for failing to negotiate health care funding agreements with the provinces. This issue weakened his government’s relationship with key stakeholders in the healthcare sector.

Decline in Popularity

In June 2024, the Liberal Party lost one of its safest seats in a special election in Toronto. In October, more than 20 Liberal lawmakers urged Trudeau not to run for Prime Minister for a fourth term. Currently, the Liberal Party holds 153 seats in the House of Commons.

US-Canada Relations

Newly elected US President Donald Trump announced a 25% tariff on all goods imported from Mexico and Canada. This tariff, aimed at controlling drugs and immigration, could severely impact Canada’s economy and further weaken Trudeau’s popularity.

Internal Party Issues

A few weeks ago, Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland resigned. Trudeau had asked her to take on a less significant role, leading to her decision to step down. Freeland, who was Canada’s chief trade negotiator during Trump’s first administration and one of Trudeau’s most trusted allies, resigned due to disagreements over the budget and the potential US tariffs.
