U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken to Visit South Korea, Japan, and France Amid Political Crisis in Seoul

The U.S. Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, will embark on a trip to South Korea, Japan, and France from January 4 to 9, the State Department announced on Friday. This visit comes amid a political crisis in Seoul, where South Korea’s presidential guards and military troops recently prevented authorities from arresting impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol. Yoon is under criminal investigation for insurrection following his December 3, 2024, martial law bid.

During his visit to South Korea, Blinken will meet with senior government officials to discuss strengthening efforts to promote a free, open, and prosperous Indo-Pacific region, as well as trilateral cooperation with Japan. The State Department emphasized the importance of these discussions in light of the ongoing political turmoil in Seoul.

In France, Blinken will address challenges in the Middle East and Europe, including ongoing efforts to secure a ceasefire in Gaza. The visit aims to reinforce the U.S.’s commitment to addressing global issues and maintaining strong alliances with key partners.
