Victims of the New Orleans New Year’s Attack: A Heartbreaking Tale

Martin “Tiger” Bech – In his late twenties, Martin was not just a name in sports but a legend at Princeton University. Known affectionately as “Tiger,” his nickname was a testament to his spirit both on and off the field. His football coach, Bob Surace, remembered him as a relentless competitor with boundless energy, a true friend, and a cherished teammate. Martin’s brother, Jack, shared a poignant tribute on X, promising to carry on for both of them. His high school coach, Marty Cannon, couldn’t praise him enough, speaking not just of his athletic prowess but his character, leaving a void that words cannot fill.
Nikyra Cheyenne Dedeaux – At just 18, Nikyra’s future was bright; she was eager to step into the shoes of her mother, Melissa, as a nurse. Her life was cut tragically short on what should have been the dawn of new beginnings. Her mother’s plea for prayers on social media was a heart-wrenching testament to a mother’s loss. Nikyra had plans to start her nursing training, dreams now left unfulfilled. Her friend Dante Reed recounted the desperate moments of the attack, highlighting the senselessness of her absence. His cousin, Shirell, remembered him as full of life, having just wished his family a Happy New Year. His sister, Courtney, spoke of his love for family and his competitive spirit in games, now silenced. Reggie was out celebrating, leaving behind a family to mourn a life that ended too soon.
Kareem Badawi – A young student at the University of Alabama, Kareem’s life was a beacon of potential. His father, Belal, shared his grief with a community, invoking prayers for peace and strength. Kareem’s graduation from high school was a proud moment, one that now feels like an echo of what could have been. The university president, Stuart R Bell, mourned alongside the family, urging prayers for all touched by this tragedy.
Hubert Gauthreaux – At 21, Hubert was remembered by Archbishop Shaw High School with prayers for his soul and those left behind. His life, like a candle snuffed out too soon, left a community in mourning, seeking solace in faith and remembrance.
Nicole Perez – A mother at 27, Nicole was the heart of the deli she managed. Her friend and boss, Kimberly Usher Fall, spoke of her dedication, intelligence, and the love she had for her son, teaching him in the quiet corners of the store. Her sudden departure has left a void in the lives of those who knew her, especially her young child, now left with memories and stories.
Matthew Tenedorio – Known for his laid-back spirit and laughter that could light up any room, Matthew, at 25, was an audio-visual technician with a promising career. His last moments with his family on New Year’s Eve are now cherished memories, his decision to celebrate turning into a nightmare. His cousin Christina’s frustration with the lack of information from authorities adds layers of pain, leaving a family in limbo, seeking closure in a tragedy too raw to comprehend.

This New Year’s attack in New Orleans has not only claimed lives but has shattered dreams, torn families apart, and left a community grappling with grief. Each victim was more than a statistic; they were loved, they had stories, and they left an indelible mark on those who knew them. As we remember them, we mourn not just their loss but the potential that will never be realized, the love that will forever be missed.
