Zelensky: Peace Won’t Be a Gift, But U.S. Will Stand with Ukraine

In a powerful 21-minute New Year video address, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky declared that peace would not be handed to Ukraine as a gift, but he expressed confidence that the United States would continue to support Kyiv in its fight against Russia’s 34-month invasion.

Zelensky emphasized that only a strong Ukraine could secure peace and earn global respect. He recalled conversations with outgoing U.S. President Joe Biden, President-elect Donald Trump, and other American supporters, expressing optimism that the new U.S. president would help bring peace and end Russian President Vladimir Putin’s aggression.

Highlighting the untrustworthiness of Russia, Zelensky stated, “If today Russia shakes your hand, it doesn’t mean that tomorrow the same hand will not start killing you.” He stressed the importance of Ukraine’s strength in both battle and negotiations, noting recent military advancements and the need for continued Western support and security guarantees.

Zelensky concluded by urging Ukrainians to fight for a strong and respected Ukraine in the coming year.
