Jurassic World Rebirth’ Compared to Spielberg’s Iconic Film ‘Jaws’

Steven Spielberg may have directed the first two films in the Jurassic Park franchise, but the upcoming installment, Jurassic World Rebirth, has drawn comparisons to another one of his classics: Jaws.

Earlier this year, Universal Pictures announced plans for the fourth entry in the Jurassic World series, making it the seventh film overall in the Jurassic Park franchise, which began in 1993. The movie quickly found its director in Gareth Edwards, known for his work on the Star Wars and Godzilla franchises, and an impressive cast including Scarlett Johansson, Jonathan Bailey, and Mahershala Ali.

With the release just months away, Edwards spoke to Entertainment Weekly about the film, describing it as a “giant love letter” to Spielberg and his early works. “There are moments in this movie that remind me very much of Jaws,” Edwards said. “It’s like a little greatest hits of all those aspects of his films that I loved growing up as a child.”

Edwards went on to explain that Jurassic World Rebirth is an adventure odyssey and survival story set on an island, much like Jaws. He drew parallels between the film’s central trio of characters and the dynamic between Brody, Hooper, and Quint from Jaws. “It’s that kind of triangle between three different overlapping characters,” Edwards noted. “There’s a lot of fun between the three of them that really popped out to me. It’s less of a love triangle and much more of a competitive ‘who’s the alpha in the group?’ kind of way.”

Jurassic World Rebirth, which takes place five years after the events of Jurassic World Dominion, follows Zora Bennett (Johansson), a skilled covert operations expert, as she leads a team on a top-secret mission to secure genetic material from the world’s three most massive dinosaurs.

The film is set to be released on July 2, 2025.
