Car Plows Into German Christmas Market, Leaving One Dead and Up to 80 Injured

A tragic incident unfolded in the German city of Magdeburg as a car drove into a crowded Christmas market, killing at least one person and injuring up to 80 others, according to local authorities.
Fire and emergency services reported that the number of injured ranged between 60 and 80. Police confirmed that the driver of the vehicle responsible for the attack has been arrested.
Verified footage circulating on social media shows the harrowing moment when a black car sped into the market, filled with people enjoying the festive season. The video captures scenes of chaos as attendees scramble for safety—some diving into stalls, others running in panic. Bodies and debris were left scattered along the narrow streets as the car exited the plaza.
Magdeburg police have implemented extensive security measures at the scene, according to a statement on X (formerly Twitter).
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz expressed his condolences, writing on social media, “My thoughts are with the victims of this attack. We stand with them and the people of Magdeburg. My gratitude goes out to the dedicated rescue workers in these anxious hours.”
Reiner Haseloff, the prime minister of Saxony-Anhalt, described the event as devastating, particularly in the days leading up to Christmas. He is reportedly on his way to Magdeburg to assess the situation.
Magdeburg, the state capital of Saxony-Anhalt with a population of approximately 240,000, hosts its annual Christmas market from November 22 to December 29. The market features around 140 stalls, an ice-skating rink, a Ferris wheel, and a children’s play area, drawing large crowds during the festive season.
Authorities are investigating the motive behind the attack as the city mourns this shocking tragedy during what should be a time of joy and celebration.
