Bomb Attack at Thai Festival Leaves Three Dead, Dozens Injured


A tragic explosion at the annual Red Cross Doi Loyfa fair in Umphang district, Thailand’s northern Tak province, has left at least three people dead and dozens injured. The attack, which occurred late Friday night, shocked attendees and raised concerns over public safety at festive gatherings.

The explosion occurred around 11:30 p.m. local time (16:30 GMT), near an outdoor stage where festivalgoers were dancing. According to local police and rescue teams, the explosive device, believed to be an improvised explosive device (IED), was thrown into the crowd. The blast caused widespread panic, with emergency responders and bystanders rushing to aid the injured.
Reports indicate that at least 48 people sustained injuries, with six in critical condition. Victims were rushed to nearby hospitals, while first responders worked tirelessly to manage the chaotic scene.
Suspects in Custody
Two suspects are currently in custody, but no formal charges have been filed as authorities continue their investigation. The motive behind the attack remains unclear, and officials are examining possible links to regional tensions or other security concerns.

Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra expressed her condolences to the victims and their families in a statement on social media platform X. She directed police and security agencies to intensify their investigation and provide support to those affected. Additionally, the Prime Minister called for an increase in police presence at all public events to prevent similar incidents.

The Red Cross Doi Loyfa fair is a significant cultural event in Umphang, attracting between 8,000 and 9,000 attendees annually. This year’s festival was nearing its conclusion when the attack occurred. Umphang, located in Tak province, borders Myanmar and is known for its diverse cultural heritage and scenic beauty.
Authorities are working to determine whether the attack has any connection to local or cross-border conflicts, as the region has occasionally experienced unrest due to its proximity to Myanmar.
