How Trump’s Tariffs May Impact Hollywood Production

Donald Trump’s tariff could unintentionally affect where Hollywood chooses to shoot films and TV shows. After the 2023 writers’ and actors’ strikes, the Canadian dollar dropped significantly, making it cheaper for Hollywood to film in Canada. However, Trump’s threat of a 25% tariff on Canadian and Mexican exports could push the Canadian dollar even lower, further benefiting Hollywood producers.
The lower exchange rate is already encouraging studios and streamers to return to Canada for shooting, as costs are lower than in the U.S. But this could lead to challenges, as Canadian producers may face higher costs for American software, equipment, and crews.
Some Canadian indie producers, like Josh Bowen of Cutting Class Media, are finding creative ways to work around tariffs by offering partners good value. Meanwhile, Canadian VFX studios and other production companies, like those in Toronto, are optimistic about the opportunities 2025 will bring, thanks to tax incentives and skilled crews.
The main concern now is whether U.S. buyers of Canadian content will be affected by these tariffs, prompting Canadian producers to seek government assistance. Overall, the shift in production could create both opportunities and competition in Canada’s growing film industry.
