Haiti: Gang Leader Accused of Killing 110 Elderly Residents Over Witchcraft Claims

At least 110 people were killed in Haiti’s Cite Soleil slum over the weekend after a gang leader targeted elderly residents, accusing them of using witchcraft to harm his child, the National Human Rights Defense Network (RNDDH) reported on December 9.

Monel “Mikano” Felix, leader of the Viv Ansanm gang, allegedly ordered the massacre after a voodoo priest blamed residents over the age of 60 for his child’s illness. RNDDH said gang members used machetes and knives to kill 60 people on December 7 and another 50 on December 8.

Cite Soleil, one of Haiti’s poorest and most violent areas, remains under tight gang control, which has limited the flow of information about the attack. Felix, banned from entering the Dominican Republic since 2022, is believed to still operate with impunity in the region.
