Legendary Actor Mamunur Rashid Barred from Performing by Yunus Government Directive

Mamunur Rashid, a celebrated freedom fighter and pioneer in Bangladesh’s arts and theater, has been barred from performing at the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy. The decision was reportedly made by the academy’s director general, Syed Jamil Ahmed, who was appointed during the tenure of the Yunus government, which is said to support Islamic fundamentalists.

Mamunur Rashid, known for his contributions to stage, TV, film, and OTT platforms, expressed shock and sadness at the ban. He has been a leading figure in the development of Bangladeshi theater since the 1960s and has mentored countless artists. Rashid, a recipient of the Ekushey Padak, stated, “This decision deeply hurts me. I have played a significant role in the theater movement of this country.”

The ban has sparked widespread criticism, as it is seen as a political move to suppress opposing ideologies. Many artists, journalists, and cultural figures have reportedly faced restrictions under the current regime, with some even leaving the country for safety.

Rashid’s exclusion stems from a statement he made earlier, which he claims has been misinterpreted. He was accused of being “anti-revolutionary” for a remark he made criticizing the “Rajakar” slogan during a student uprising. Rashid clarified, “I participated in protests against police shootings on students and marched against injustice. How can I be anti-revolutionary?”

The ban came shortly after Rashid successfully performed in the play Mayur Singhasan, which was well-received by the audience without any disruptions. However, he was later informed he could not act in his own play, Raṛhaṅg, during a Shilpakala Academy tour. His theater group, Aranyak, rejected the condition.

The director general of the Shilpakala Academy, Syed Jamil Ahmed, denied imposing a formal ban but confirmed that Rashid was asked to refrain from performing temporarily. “Our decision is not against any theater group but against individuals who oppose revolutionary ideals,” he said.

This decision has fueled ongoing debates about freedom of expression in Bangladesh’s cultural and artistic sectors.
