522 Murders, 774 Rapes in Two Months, Broken law and order in Bangladesh

The law and order situation across Bangladesh Govt has significantly deteriorated. Protests and road blockades over various issues have become routine, causing immense suffering to the general public. The situation has reached a point where even incidents like attacks on court premises, leading to the murder of lawyers, are occurring. Crimes such as theft, robbery, snatching, and abduction have surged alarmingly, along with an increase in murders. Cases of “mob justice” and public lynching are raising concerns, with at least 68 individuals killed in mob beatings over the last three months. Such incidents have become daily occurrences, creating a sense of fear among the public.

Regarding the issue the Bangladeshi lead newspaper ‘the daily Jugantor ( jugantor.com) has revealed a report today on November 28. We would like to publish this report, here thevoice.news for public safety and interest in bellow.

During the night, groups armed with local weapons and sticks are often seen parading in different parts of the capital city, Dhaka, leading to an alarming environment. Despite these issues, not all incidents are being reported or recorded. However, according to police data, nearly 25,500 cases were filed nationwide in September and October alone.

Crime Statistics:

According to the police headquarters, 25,456 cases were filed across the country during September and October. These include 1,296 murder and rape cases, with 522 being murders. Additionally, there were 111 robbery cases, 231 dacoity cases, 221 quick trial cases, 24 riot-related cases, and 774 rape cases. Cases of violence against women numbered 1,833, child abuse cases 529, abduction cases 161, attacks on police 58, burglary cases 481, and theft cases 1,328. Other crimes accounted for 13,211 cases. During the same period, 270 cases were filed under the Arms Act, 214 under the Explosives Act, 5,099 drug-related cases, and 338 cases of smuggling.

A comparison with the same months of the previous year shows a significant reduction in drug-related cases, which decreased by 7,501. However, incidents of robbery increased by 68, dacoity by 19, murder by 34, quick trial cases by 57, riots by 11, child abuse by 56, abduction by 63, arms-related incidents by 9, and burglary by 27. On the other hand, rape cases decreased by 100, violence against women by 110, attacks on police by 67, theft by 371, and smuggling cases by 143.

Rising Fear Amid High-Profile Murders:

Reports suggest that almost every day, a murder is reported somewhere in the capital. High-profile incidents include the killing of a UK-based doctor in West Dhanmondi on November 16, the abduction of an eight-month-old child, and several other shocking murders in areas like Hazaribagh, Shahjahanpur, and Rampura in recent months.

Additionally, on November 25, a Youth League activist was killed in Pabna due to internal disputes. Earlier, a mother and child were murdered inside their home in Sunamganj on October 31, while the discovery of a woman’s body in a deep freezer in Bogura also drew nationwide attention.

In the last two weeks of November, there were multiple incidents of drivers being killed to snatch vehicles in Narayanganj, Narsingdi, Kishoreganj, and Jhenaidah. On November 10, a police officer in Chattogram was beaten by a mob after being accused of impersonation.

Official Statements:

Inamul Haque Sagar, AIG (Media) of the police headquarters, remarked, “Crime rates tend to fluctuate, which is a natural phenomenon. Addressing the root causes of crime requires both social and judicial measures. However, the police remain vigilant in controlling crime and taking swift action against offenders. Field officers have been instructed to maintain law and order, while we urge everyone to refrain from activities that disrupt public peace and cause inconvenience to city dwellers.
